Quoting Injection Molds

Accurate quotes built from decades of real tool costs, so the number you approve matches the tool you receive.

An injection mold quote is more than a number. It is a promise about steel, cavitation, actions, cooling, lead time and the parts the tool will make for years. When the quote is built on the wrong assumptions, the cost shows up later as change orders, extra trials and missed launch dates. BG Innovations helps OEMs, startups and molders get injection mold quotes that are complete, comparable and realistic before a purchase order goes out.

Why injection mold quotes go wrong

Most quoting problems are not about price. They come from what the quote leaves out. A missed slide or lifter, an unrealistic cavitation choice, a steel grade that does not match the annual volume, or cooling that was never really designed can all hide inside a number that looks competitive. Once the tool is in build, every one of those gaps turns into a change order.

Bob Gray has spent more than 45 years around injection molds, including quoting and RFQ work for OEM and brand programs. That history gives him a practical sense of what a tool for a given part should really cost, and which line items are usually missing when one quote comes in far below the others.

What a quoting review covers

Every engagement starts with the part, the volume and the program goals. From there, Bob builds or checks the quote against the details that drive tool cost and tool life:

  • Part geometry, undercuts and the actions (slides, lifters, unscrewing cores) needed to mold it
  • Cavitation and runner layout matched to annual volume and press size
  • Steel selection for cavity, core and inserts based on material and expected mold life
  • Gating, cooling and ejection assumptions built into the price
  • Texture, polish and cosmetic requirements
  • Trial rounds, sampling, documentation and shipping
  • Lead time, payment terms, warranty and what happens if the tool needs corrections

Comparing quotes side by side

Quotes from different mold builders rarely line up. One shop includes hot runner components, another lists them separately. One assumes P20, another quotes H13. One includes two trial rounds, another only one. Bob normalizes the quotes so you can compare them on equal terms and see the real difference in total cost, not just the headline price.

The lowest quote is often not the lowest total cost. A tool that needs three rounds of corrections, extra weeks of trials or early maintenance costs far more than the savings on the purchase order. A quoting review makes those risks visible while you can still negotiate.

Domestic and offshore tooling

Many programs weigh a domestic mold builder against an offshore one. Both can be the right answer. Domestic builders usually offer faster communication, shorter lead times and easier support. Offshore builders can reduce cost on larger tools, but need clear specifications and careful follow-up. Bob helps you write the specification so every builder quotes the same tool, wherever it is built.

Who this service is for

Quoting reviews help purchasing teams and engineers at OEMs who buy tooling but do not quote molds every day, startups launching their first injection molded product, and molders who want a second opinion before committing to a customer price. Bob has supported programs for brands including BMW, Tesla, Honda, GE Appliances, Nissan and Polaris Off Road, so he understands the standards larger customers expect.

How the engagement works

Most quoting reviews are done remotely. You share the part CAD, drawings, volume targets and any quotes you already have. Bob reviews them, marks up the scope and sends back clear findings: what is missing, what is over-specified, and what a fair price range looks like. A follow-up call with you and, if useful, your mold builder closes the open questions.

Quoting is the first step in a tool's life, and it sets the tone for everything after it. Getting it right means fewer surprises in design, cleaner trials and a tool that performs the way it was priced to perform. To talk through a quote or an RFQ package, book a free 15-minute call with Bob.

Frequently asked questions

Can you review quotes I already received?

Yes. Many clients send two or three builder quotes and ask which one is complete and realistic. Bob compares them line by line and flags missing items.

Do you work with offshore mold builders?

Yes. Bob helps write specifications and review quotes for both domestic and offshore tooling.

How long does a quoting review take?

Most reviews are turned around in a few business days, depending on the number of parts and quotes.
